AN EVALUATION OF DEMOCRACY AND ITS IMPACT ON NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT: A CASE STUDY OF BUHARI ADMINISTRATION (2015-2023)

ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to investigate the theoretical framework of democracy and its correlation with the process of national development. The focus of the analysis was specifically on the administration led by President Buhari. The objective of this study was to provide a comprehensive analysis of the challenges faced by democracy in Nigeria, as well as to identify and evaluate potential policy measures that could facilitate the country's overall progress and development. The research utilised the survey methodology and included a sample size of 80 participants who were affiliated with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The study using the likert-scale methodology to examine the impediments to democracy in Nigeria. The results indicated that ethnic and tribal conflicts, religious differences, resource distribution, and corruption emerged as noteworthy challenges. Subsequent investigations indicate that the administration led by President Buhari has demonstrated limited effectiveness in the implementation and enforcement of policies and laws aimed at promoting national development. These include legislation pertaining to human rights, commerce and investment, education, and security. The results of the study additionally indicate that there exists no discernible correlation between democracy and national growth within the administration led by President Buhari. The report proposes the adoption of comprehensive legislation and policies aimed at promoting national development. It asserts that for the relationship between democracy and national development under the Buhari-led administration to be successful, it is crucial to ensure competent leadership.
